Google calls the technique query fan-out. When you ask a question, AI Mode splits it into subtopics, runs a batch of related searches at the same time, and combines what it finds into a single answer. Google launched it as a Labs experiment in March 2025, opened it to everyone in the US in May 2025 and expanded it to more than 180 countries that August.

Because it pulls from many searches, one answer cites a lot of pages. SE Ranking checked 10,000 US keywords in 2025 and found each AI Mode answer linked to about 12.6 sources on average. Ahrefs found that AI Mode includes source links in about 97 percent of its answers. So there are more chances to be named than in a regular results page, but you're competing inside a much bigger set.

People also ask it different questions. In Semrush's analysis of about 69 million US desktop sessions from May to July 2025, AI Mode questions averaged 7.22 words, against 4.0 for regular searches. Buyers use it for longer, more specific questions like "which accounting software works for a five-person bakery and costs under $50 a month?" rather than "accounting software."

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

An AI Overview is the short summary that sometimes appears at the top of a normal Google results page. AI Mode is a separate tab built for questions that need more reasoning or comparison, and it keeps the conversation going with follow-ups.

They also cite different pages. Ahrefs compared answers to the same queries in September 2025 and found only 13.7 percent of the cited sources overlapped between AI Mode and AI Overviews. SE Ranking found a similarly small overlap. Being cited in one tells you little about the other, so check both.

How do you show up in AI Mode?

Clear Google's basic bar

Google's own guidance for site owners is short. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says you don't need AI text files, new markup or special schema to appear. So if Googlebot is blocked, or a page is set to noindex or nosnippet, it can't be cited. Blocking the separate Google-Extended token does not remove you from AI Mode. Our pages on allowing AI crawlers and on whether you need an llms.txt file go through the details.

Answer the questions behind the question

Ranking helps, but it isn't enough on its own. SE Ranking found that only 14 percent of the URLs AI Mode cited also ranked in Google's organic top 10 for the same keyword. Fan-out explains why. AI Mode is really answering a handful of smaller questions, so it cites whichever page answers each one most clearly. A page that states a direct answer near the top, then covers the follow-ups a buyer would ask (price, fit, how it compares), gives AI Mode more to quote. Why content that ranks still goes uncited covers this in more depth.

Get mentioned where AI Mode looks

A lot of what AI Mode cites isn't business websites at all. In Ahrefs' September 2026 data, the most-cited domains were Reddit (17.9 percent of mentions) and YouTube (17.8 percent), followed by Google's own pages, Facebook and Instagram. Wikipedia came sixth at 4.0 percent. If your category gets discussed in threads, videos and reviews, being named in those places feeds AI Mode's answers directly. For storefront and service-area businesses, Google Maps and your Business Profile matter too, as showing up in local AI search explains. See why AI cites Reddit and Wikipedia and whether YouTube helps.

Expect it to move

AI Mode's cited sources change a lot from week to week. In SISTRIX's 2026 study, about 56 percent of the domains AI Mode cited in a given week hadn't been cited the week before. One check isn't a result. Why AI citations keep changing explains how to read that.

Does AI Mode send traffic?

Not much. Semrush found that 92 to 94 percent of AI Mode sessions ended without a visit to another website. People read the answer and move on. That's why being named in the answer matters more than the click: a buyer who sees your business recommended may search for you directly later, and that visit won't show up as coming from AI Mode.

To see what you can, Search Console has counted AI Mode clicks and impressions in its Performance report (Web search type) since June 2025. Since June 2026 a separate generative AI report shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, though it reports impressions only. Google Analytics mostly can't tell AI Mode visits apart, as tracking AI traffic in Google Analytics explains.

Common questions

Is Google AI Mode the same as Gemini?

No. Gemini is Google's family of AI models, and also the name of its separate chatbot app. AI Mode is a part of Google Search that uses a Gemini model to write its answers. Since May 2026, both AI Mode and the Gemini app use Gemini 3.5 Flash by default, but AI Mode's answers are built from live Google searches and link to the pages they used.

Do I need special markup or an AI file to show up in AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no special requirements: no AI text files, no extra markup and no special schema. A page needs to be indexed and able to show a snippet in regular Google Search. Structured data still helps Google understand your pages in general, but it isn't an AI Mode entry ticket.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove my site from AI Mode?

No. Google-Extended controls whether Google can use your content to train and ground some of its other AI systems. It doesn't affect whether you appear in Google Search, including AI Mode and AI Overviews. To keep a page out of those features, you'd use noindex or the snippet controls instead.

Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?

Partly. AI Mode clicks and impressions have counted in Search Console's Performance report, under the Web search type, since June 2025. Since June 2026 there's also a generative AI report that shows how often links to your site appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It reports impressions, not clicks.

How Web Cited helps

To see where you stand in AI Mode itself, open the AI Mode tab, ask the questions your buyers ask and note who gets named. Our guide to checking whether AI search mentions your brand walks through it. Citation Monitor doesn't read the AI Mode tab. It asks your buyer questions every week across six AI engines, including Gemini, the model family behind AI Mode, so you can see how Google's models treat you next to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Grok and DeepSeek.
